Siemens Gigaset: Enjoy the latest technology in a safe way. January 18, 2010

Not so long ago, there was some concern regarding cordless phones. Indeed, they emit the same type of pulsed microwave radiation, as ordinary cell phones do. Emissions can be about 6 V/m within a metre of the base unit for as long as they are plugged in. And the problem was that they were continuously emitting radiation even when the phone was not in use. A lot of studies suggested that this kind of radiation could be hazardous for our health, especially when someone was exposed continuously to them, when near the bed or if used in the office.

Siemens took the lead, and was the first in addressing the issue based in the fact that DECT phones do not need to transmit continuously. Their first model; the Gigaset SL 785 was designed to reduce the transmitting power’s base station by 80% by selecting the Eco mode.

Since then, many of the cordless phones that Siemens have developed have this option available. Most of them, such as the Siemens Gigaset AL285 also have the ECO Mode Plus option for 100% reduction of transmitting power when the handset is idle or charging.

It is impressive how these new features have evolved in a short period of time. The energy-saving power supply of the Siemens Gigaset C385 for example, uses up to 60% less energy than conventional cordless phones – so it saves you money and is better for you and the environment.

Nowadays most of the DECT manufacturers offer “green” options so it is interesting to check the different models in order to find the one that suits you best.

Siemens Gigaset SL565: Created to impress.

If you are looking for a phone with outstanding features, convenience and a sleek design, you just found it.

Created to replace the highly-successful Gigaset SL550 and SL555 models the new Siemens Gigaset SL565 innovative approach is impressive.

Apart from its integrated 35 minute digital answering machine controlled remotely by voice commands, it’s  128×160 pixels display,  the large-capacity address book and its voice dialling feature, the SL565 will allow you to easily synchronize data with your PC via Bluetooth.

That means that users will be able to download ringtones or pictures, and even assign them to individual address book entries, or connect your phone to Microsoft Outlook. The phone itself has space for up to 250 entries with three phone numbers, an e-mail address and birthday date for each contact.

It is interesting to see how the Siemens SL565 offers features only seen until now on mobile phones to make home life easier. For example, in case you need to be not disturbed, the vibracall function allows you to stay connected in peace and quiet. It also has a SMS texting facility, 5-way navigation key and comes with 20 polyphonic ringtones.

Until now you could speak with your hands free and still enjoy the best sound quality in your car with your mobile phone, now you can just do that in the comfort of your own home with a fixed-network phone.

Thanks to the CLIP function, users can then see and hear who is calling. Its cutting edge technology will help them manage all the daily tasks with its alarm function and organizer, and is GAP compatible.

With 10 hours of talk time, and 250 hours of standby time, there is not much else you can ask for! Name it, and the Gigaset SL565 probably will have it.

DECT Cordless Telephones July 14, 2008

DECT Cordless Phones operate on a 2.4Ghz spectrum and have a maximum range of up to 300 meters in a clear line of sight situation whilst operating at more like up to 50 meters in environments where there is some electronic interference or solid boundaries such as walls for the signal to pass through.
The DECT system is built and manufactured according to the DECT European Standards as defined by The European Telecommunications Standards Institute in 1992. Since the initial stipulations of the ETSI committee the legislation has concentrated upon ensuring the interoperabilty of DECT cordless equipment from different manufacturers via the implementation of Generic Access Protocol ( GAP).
The basic operating principles of DECT Cordless Telephony are:

The operating principles above have been met and exceeded with every new DECT model from a host of manufacturers including Siemens, Philips and BT ( who produce the majority of cordless phones for the UK). DECT continues to set the standards for PSTN voice communications throughout the UK and Europe whilst Cordless Telephones have become more and more prevalent in homes and offices since ETSI’s legislation was adopted in the early nineties.

DECT 6.0 and VOIP December 10, 2007

Have a good look at the cordless phones on Telephones Online and you will notice that the word DECT comes up many times. DECT stands for “Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology”. DECT communications are now in their sixth generation. Unlike cordless phones on the 2.4Ghz or 5.8Ghz frequency, DECT 6.0 phones do not interfere with other wireless signals beaming throughout your home, such as Wi-Fi (802.11) networks, microwave ovens, baby monitors and wireless game controllers.

DECT 6.0 also offers clearer call quality, works far from its base (up to 50 metres indoors, 300 metres outdoors) and is digitally encrypted, assuring that noone else can listen into your calls – a more frequent occurrence on the older analog telephones.

Recent developments in cordless phones have led to the creation of hybrid DECT phones which allow thew option to communicate via VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology, as these calls bypass traditional PSTN’s you can therefore make free calls via your broadband Internet connection to anyone in the world via broadband telephony of VOIP. Many people use services such as Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger), Yahoo! Messenger or Skype for their VOIP chat.

For example see the PHILIPS VOIP3211 Cordless Skype Phone, this can be plugged straight in to the ethernet port of your PC/ Mac and then you can make free Skype calls as well as normal landline calls. You can make and take calls on both networks from one single handset, and you can see who is on-line without going to the PC, just by looking at the display.

DECT Phones July 24, 2007

Here at Telephones Online we have been selling DECT / Digital Cordless Phones for many years and have seen the technical specifications of these home phones grow at an incredible rate.

Early BT DiverseWhen we first started out the best selling cordless telephone was a BT Diverse 1000. This was a model manufactured by Siemens for the European market and was a simple DECT telephone. It was built according to the DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) standards set in the early 1990′s.

From DECT Web : http://www.dectweb.com
DECT is a digital wireless technology which originated in Europe, but has now been adopted increasingly worldwide, for cordless telephones, wireless offices and even wireless telephone lines to the home. The younger brother of GSM – Global System for Mobile – it is by contrast a radio access technology ( running at 2.4Ghz , rather than a comprehensive system architecture; DECT has been designed and specified to interwork with many other types of network, such as the PSTN (conventional telephone networks), ISDN (new digital and data phone networks), GSM (mobile phone networks) and more.

The BT Diverse 1000′s features, today will appear basic. It had a 10 number memory and the ability to make and receive calls; that is it. We retailed it at £99.99 – and that was the cheapest digital cordless you would find on the net!

Today Digital Cordless Phones are still running on the same technology as previously but their feature list has grown massively since then. It could be said that the market has demanded the same features that they have become accustomed to in their mobile phones.

BT Diverse 6410Today’s version of the original is the BT Diverse 6110 Digital Cordless Phone, this phone has the basic functonality of a 200 Name and Number Memory. Additional to this, and inconceivable a few years ago when we were selling the BT Diverse 1000 range of telephones, the phone includes a colour screen, sms texting, music on hold, a clock and calendar as well as a SIM card reader and caller display. Amazingly this is now sold for a fraction of the price of the original.

The evolution of the basic DECT phone has been swift and more and more features are being added with each new model that comes out; cordless home phones now can connect through a wireless connection to use VOIP / Skype, we will wait and see what comes next
