Siemens Gigaset: Enjoy the latest technology in a safe way. January 18, 2010

Not so long ago, there was some concern regarding cordless phones. Indeed, they emit the same type of pulsed microwave radiation, as ordinary cell phones do. Emissions can be about 6 V/m within a metre of the base unit for as long as they are plugged in. And the problem was that they were continuously emitting radiation even when the phone was not in use. A lot of studies suggested that this kind of radiation could be hazardous for our health, especially when someone was exposed continuously to them, when near the bed or if used in the office.

Siemens took the lead, and was the first in addressing the issue based in the fact that DECT phones do not need to transmit continuously. Their first model; the Gigaset SL 785 was designed to reduce the transmitting power’s base station by 80% by selecting the Eco mode.

Since then, many of the cordless phones that Siemens have developed have this option available. Most of them, such as the Siemens Gigaset AL285 also have the ECO Mode Plus option for 100% reduction of transmitting power when the handset is idle or charging.

It is impressive how these new features have evolved in a short period of time. The energy-saving power supply of the Siemens Gigaset C385 for example, uses up to 60% less energy than conventional cordless phones – so it saves you money and is better for you and the environment.

Nowadays most of the DECT manufacturers offer “green” options so it is interesting to check the different models in order to find the one that suits you best.

Siemens Gigaset SL565: Created to impress.

If you are looking for a phone with outstanding features, convenience and a sleek design, you just found it.

Created to replace the highly-successful Gigaset SL550 and SL555 models the new Siemens Gigaset SL565 innovative approach is impressive.

Apart from its integrated 35 minute digital answering machine controlled remotely by voice commands, it’s  128×160 pixels display,  the large-capacity address book and its voice dialling feature, the SL565 will allow you to easily synchronize data with your PC via Bluetooth.

That means that users will be able to download ringtones or pictures, and even assign them to individual address book entries, or connect your phone to Microsoft Outlook. The phone itself has space for up to 250 entries with three phone numbers, an e-mail address and birthday date for each contact.

It is interesting to see how the Siemens SL565 offers features only seen until now on mobile phones to make home life easier. For example, in case you need to be not disturbed, the vibracall function allows you to stay connected in peace and quiet. It also has a SMS texting facility, 5-way navigation key and comes with 20 polyphonic ringtones.

Until now you could speak with your hands free and still enjoy the best sound quality in your car with your mobile phone, now you can just do that in the comfort of your own home with a fixed-network phone.

Thanks to the CLIP function, users can then see and hear who is calling. Its cutting edge technology will help them manage all the daily tasks with its alarm function and organizer, and is GAP compatible.

With 10 hours of talk time, and 250 hours of standby time, there is not much else you can ask for! Name it, and the Gigaset SL565 probably will have it.

BT Verve 500 June 17, 2008

I run a small office from home and spend most of the day on the telephone, advising clients on various issues and have to say that this is just the sort of phone I want on my desktop. I could use it all day.

The BT Verve 500 Twin is a very well designed package. It looks and feels great. And lets face it, ownership of consumer items is the ‘be all and end all’ of life these days. It is a lovely to hold digital cordless phone in an exciting red colour. This is a colour and finish reminiscent of a Smeg© fridge in all its glory; a retro red like the Plymouth Fury in the film Christine.

Naturally the telephone is fully featured with all the, now usual, bells and whistles now included with even the most basic of cordless phones.

Worth noting, though, are the hefty half hour’s recording time on its Answering Machine and its clear colour screen which is still quite legible even in brightly lit conditions.

I have not always been a big fan of BT, but have to admit that I switched back to them recently and have been extremely impressed at their phone and broadband packages and, all in all, I just loved this beautifully designed cordless phone from BT, I am a convert to British Telecom now.

Energy Efficient Cordless Phones March 31, 2008

BT Graphite 1500 Greener PhoneCordless Telephones are no different from other household electrical appliances in that they need power to operate. A DECT handset needs to make frequent communication with the base station to allow immedaite connection in the instance of incoming or outgoing call..

This frequent communication, naturally, requires power (the reason that a cordless phone’s standby time is inversely proportional to its distance from the base station); and as we know all power consumption is both bad for your pocket and the environment. Electricity costs money and incurs pollution in the form of carbon emissions.

Because of this BT have recently put a lot of thought into how they can reduce the environmental impact of cordless phones. They have managed to reduce power consumption by up to a half.

DECT Phones do not take a large amount of power or money to run, but if in every area we try to make savings we will find that there is a huge beneficial effect to both planet and pocket.

The new range of greener bt phones includes the latest BT Freestyle Range and the highly energy efficient BT Graphite 1500 shown above.

BT Synergy 4500 Review February 12, 2008

Having tested and used a wide variety of DECT Cordless Phones over the past few years I can report very favourable findings about the BT Synergy 4500.

The telephone is available in a single version as well as the more interesting twin and triple handset options. It being a DECT phone using GAP protocol you will have access to call transfer and intercom facilities between different handsets registered to the same base station – ideal for the family home or small office environment.

The Synergy 4500 also incorporates a digital answering machine with 11.5 minutes of recording time. You are also able to remote acess the messages, by keying in a PIN number, very useful when you are away from home for a while or on holiday.

The above are nowadays considered to be almost to be expected of a cordless phone. However the BT Synergy 4500 also incorporates a SIM Card reader, you can copy your mobile SIM directory to your home phone; SMS text messaging feature and the luxury of personalised ringtones so that you can ( if subscribed to caller display ) set a ringtone per caller – thus easing the necessity of getting up in some instances.

The phone is finished with a stunning titanium exterior which is doubly enhanced by its brilliant blue screen.

BT Introduces New Energy Saving Telephones January 24, 2008

BT has announced and instigated a plan to improve the efficiency of its fixed-line, home phone range, with the new telephone handsets which reduce carbon emissions. The company will ensure that 90% of fixed telephone lines provided by BT will be more energy-efficient by Mid 2008, without additional costs for the consumer.

The new telephones have been designed using power units that consume half the power required by older units. This will help in cutting down electricity usage and also check the consumer’s carbon footprint.

Gavin Patterson, managing director, consumer for BT, said:

“BT has continued to address environmental concerns by launching phones that consume approximately half the electricity of previous models; this will make a major contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. We know that our customers are just as keen to reduce environmental impact and through these phones we will jointly make a significant difference.”

The first phones in the new energy saving range are Dect Cordless Telephones, encompassing the BT Graphite 1500, which has been provided with an answering machine too, the BT Graphite 1100, BT Freestyle 610 and BT Freestyle 650 with answering machine.

BT claim that the introduction of the new range of power supplied for its Dect Cordless Home phones will massively reduce carbon emissions and save consumers up to £40 million in reduced electricity bills per year.
