BT Introduces New Energy Saving Telephones January 24, 2008
BT has announced and instigated a plan to improve the efficiency of its fixed-line, home phone range, with the new telephone handsets which reduce carbon emissions. The company will ensure that 90% of fixed telephone lines provided by BT will be more energy-efficient by Mid 2008, without additional costs for the consumer.
The new telephones have been designed using power units that consume half the power required by older units. This will help in cutting down electricity usage and also check the consumer’s carbon footprint.
Gavin Patterson, managing director, consumer for BT, said:
“BT has continued to address environmental concerns by launching phones that consume approximately half the electricity of previous models; this will make a major contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. We know that our customers are just as keen to reduce environmental impact and through these phones we will jointly make a significant difference.”
The first phones in the new energy saving range are Dect Cordless Telephones, encompassing the BT Graphite 1500, which has been provided with an answering machine too, the BT Graphite 1100, BT Freestyle 610 and BT Freestyle 650 with answering machine.
BT claim that the introduction of the new range of power supplied for its Dect Cordless Home phones will massively reduce carbon emissions and save consumers up to £40 million in reduced electricity bills per year.
BT Caller Display | Phone Freedom November 6, 2007
The phone rings and I stumble through the living room to find it. It is emitting a nasty beeping noise which grates upon my fragile consciousness. I thumb the green button on the handset and realise that I am too late, I have missed the call, still half asleep I make my way back to the sofa where I was snoozing..
This scenario can be a thing of the past with a shiny new cordless phone, with BT Caller Display you can have ( such as on a mobile phone ) the callers identity broadcast to your telephone before it even thinks about ringing. It is the main reason that I chose not to go with a cable provider, it is a must for any home phone system. As your handset is rarely at your fingertips, unlike your Nokia or Sony Ericsson, you really get massive benefits from a digital cordless phone with Caller Display. Look at it like this :
Your home phone has a telephone directory on it. You assign different ringtones ( often from a selection of smooth polyphonics) to different callers. This way when your telephone is first sprung into action it knows what to do, it lets you know who is calling allowing you the casual luxury of deciding whether to get up and answer it or whether to kick back and let it ring.
BT are currently offering this service as part of many packages or for a small monthly charge and have the follwing information available to users, both prospective and present :
- You can dial 141 before calling a number to prevent your number being displayed to another person
- If you are ex directory or unlisted and wish your number to be displayed, dial 142 before the number you are calling.
- Order Caller Line Restriction to permanently block your number being displayed
So get it enabled ( if you have a BT Telephone Contract ) and have the opportunity at last to filter your incoming phone calls.
From BT Website :Caller Display allows you to see the number of the person calling. Caller Display cannot disclose the number if the number is withheld or unavailable. If your phone doesn’t have a compatible screen, you’ll need a Caller Display Unit.

Buying a Telephone Online October 9, 2007
We would like to thank Mr J Kenny who sent us this descriptive article about his search for a replacement cordless phone
I have to thank Telephones Online for a superlative shopping experience, my old BT Cordless telephone finally packed in, gave up the ghost and died. I was at a loss. I had been accustomed to the freedom of a wireless handset. I talk a lot on the phone, and modern life being what it is; I can ill afford the luxury of sitting down in my armchair and chatting for hours on end. So I would stick the DECT Handset in my pocket, stick it on either loudspeaker or use a headset/ earpiece and continue my endless duties of hanging washing, putting out the rubbish, washing up – the list is infinite, I have even shaved whilst on the phone, but don’t tell my mum, who was at the time completely unaware that I had performed my ablutions and then shaved whilst discussing my sister’s forthcoming wedding on the phone with her for an hour.
Where was I, yes, my digital phone went kaput and I was spending my life in mortal dread for when the phone would next ring and I would have to cease my duties and sit down until whoever was at the other end was finished with my ear.
Once it had really sunk in that my faithful phone was no more, I felt a slight excitement in the anticipation which I knew would follow. Suddenly I was a m an on a mission, one out of the norm also, I was hunting for a new cordless phone and I felt like a circling lion.
Another facet of modern life is that we have the whole world at our fingertips, we wield uncanny power from our home broadband packages. A technology which allow us to access bus timetables in Bangalore, tide levels in Timbuktu will certainly facilitate the search for a telephone.
I like most all of the search engines, they are my friends, I tend to be fair in using them also, I try to make sure that I give each of the ‘big three’ ( Yahoo, Live and Google ) an equal share of my searches. I cant remember which search engine I used, but I typed in “home phones” to the little box and, hey presto, the search results were returned. I sifted, as one does, out some of the bogus results ( I ignored the sponsored ads as anyone can get in there) and finally ended up on Telephones Online – otherwise I would not be writing this short.
What I liked about the website was that it ( to borrow a phrase ) : ‘does what it says on the box’ – it sells Telephones Online, and had lots of Telephones, just about every Telephone a person could imagine – that kind of pulled it for me, there was no pretentiousness about it, just, well, Telephones Online..
Well, the rest of the story is predictable, I looked through the various telephones, looking at the specifications, carefully contrasting the features and balancing up the pros and cons of each single or multi handset system from a variety of manufacturers until I reached the one and only possible choice I could make…………
Thoroughly confused at such a choice I made that call to their customer services team :
me : – hi can you recommend a good digital handset, with a long talk time and………etc etc
CS : - yes Sir, I would try the .BT Lyric 2100….
That was that, I gave my credit card details over the phone and received it 48 hours later
Funny thing that I would have received it 24 hours later, but the courier called – and I could not get to the door – I was on the phone…
My New Phone October 3, 2007
My word, what a gift I received yesterday….
I had been waiting for a long time for my present and it arrived on time.
Now, I should explain to you that I had, for a long time been completely antagonistic to all attempts to buy me a cordless phone.
- What do I need one for?
- The batteries will be a pain to replace..
- I will keep losing it!
- They look stupid..
These had been my usual arguements against replacing my traditional telephone with a cordless one, but I had, after much haranguing, finally bent my head to pressure and allowed my son to order me a telephone online.
I had insisted that it not be too fussy, I did not want, nor need, colour screen nor personal organiser functionality.
My new Philips Cordless Phone.
It arrived, as i said previously, delivered to my door as and when promised by the online telephone retailers, I gingerly opened the courier delivery and managed to open the box without issue. I, then left the phone on charge for 6 hours as per the manual’s instructions.
The answers to my questions were as follows :
- It is actually very liberating being able to answer a phone call whether on toilet or in garden
- I have since learned that a cordless phone batteries will last around a year and are generic AA batteries as you use in a camera or remote control.
- I have lost it a few times, but you can page it form the base.
- It actually looks, and feels quite nice…
Corded Phones and their Cords September 16, 2007
Yesterday I thought a lot about the cords which connect the telephone handset to the actual telephone itself.
It all started out with by obsession with American soaps, I love them I do, I love the safe humour, I love their lifestyles, I love their teeth, their apartments and general bonhomie. I love how when a man gets back from work his spouse asks him if he wants a beer from the cooler, wow, no one I have asked here in the UK has ever had that happen to them. Anyway, what brings me to this subject is that I always notice in the US soaps and sitcoms that their telephones have really long wires ( the curly wurly ones ) – I mean, why don’t we have such long cords here in the UK. Did we not invent telephones? Why is it that an American seems to be able to wander freely ( unless they make the potentially fatal mistake of performing a pirouette ) about with a seemingly unending piece of wire following them.
I thought for a while that it could be something to do with a difference in electrical currents, maybe there was something about impedence or resistance ( barely remembered words from school ) which limited the length of UK line cords to like a metre (4 foot I mean ) to prevent scalding or overheating. Some small research denied this theory.
It must therefore be a lifestyle thing, Americans like to wander around whilst on the phone. But on this side of the Atlantic we have now, a long tradition in DECT Digital Cordless Phones so we are used to wandering about as we chat on the telephone.
Finally I had a kind of hazy and meaningful thought about Americans being connected to a like, kind of umbilical chord to their telephone ( and hence the talker on the other end of the line ). That must be it I conclude. They like that actual, semi physical, connection which the corded phone evokes…. funny that……..
