Telephones Buyer's Guide and Resources

CORDLESS PHONE BUYING GUIDE

ABOUT

Modern Cordless telephones are typically DECT/ Digital - meaning that they communicate with the base station - the part which is connected to the phone socket via multiple digital channels using the European DECT standard.

These phones typically have a maximum range of up to 300m though this range is affected by walls and thick floors.

HOW MANY HANDSETS?

Generally one can register multiple handsets to a single base station with a digital phone - in this instance you can then have the freedom to place handsets wherever you like in the home ( or office ) as long as they are within range of the base station.
When you have multiple handsets registered to a base unit you can transfer calls from one handset to the other and also intercom from one handset to the other. When buying a cordless phone you may wish to look for a twin or triple system for true convenience.

DO I NEED AN ANSWER MACHINE?

Some cordless phones have a built in digital answer machine which is another thing to consider when buying a phone as it can be a very useful device to have built into your telephone. Of course you may prefer not to take messages and if you subscribe to caller id you can retrieve a list of missed calls from most home cordless phones.

OTHER FEATURES TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CORDLESS PHONE

Other features may be handsfree speakerphone, nuisance call blocking and accessibility and disability features - more on that here.

Some manufacturers, particurlarly but not solely Gigaset have, of late, specialised in producing eco friendly home phones, which not only give off less radiation, but consume less power and are made with far fewer harmful materials.
